The course aims to provide the fundamental theoretical concepts of seismology, together with practical applications on the acquisition and analysis of seismological data.
In the first part of the course, the theory of waves in the elastic field and theory of seismic source will be presented. The elements necessary for understanding the seismic source mechanism, and the different seismic phases that compose a seismogram will be discussed.
The different types of instrumentation will be briefly introduced (accelerometers, velocimeters, GPS, nodes, etc.) illustrating their use in monitoring and seismological investigations. Particular emphasis will also be placed on the properties of environmental seismic microtremors and the potential of passive techniques for subsoil investigations based on the study of surface waves.
Basic concepts of seismic hazard will be presented, together with the main tool provided by INGV (such as databases relating to waveforms and strong-motion data recorded by the stations of the National Seismic Network) for the dissemination and preliminary analysis of seismic data.
A part of the course will cover practical exercises (both on the computer and eventually in the field) for: i) the configuration and installation of a seismic station or several stations in array geometry, ii) the picking of the P and S phases within localization techniques, iii) the analysis of the data acquired at a single station or from an array of stations.
During the course will be provided insights on topics of particular interest in the seismological field as seismic tomography, volcanic seismology and hydro-seismology.
