Applying for InterMaths Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree

Our 2-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Programme in Interdisciplinary Mathematics begins in September. If you are interested in joining the forthcoming edition, read the information below and submit your application via our online tool

Every year we offer a number of full scholarships through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Programme (EMJMD) worth 49,000 EUR (maximum). Note that:

We won't charge you any fee to take part in the application process.

To apply for an EMJMD scholarship, you won't need to submit a separate application

By submitting your application before the set deadline for scholarships (see below), your application will automatically be considered for EMJMD scholarships, too.

For candidates who will not be awarded an EMJMD scholarship, the InterMaths Consortium will allocate a certain number (TBD) of "Consortium Scholarships" (see below).

For practical reasons, by filling our application form you are applying for all three programmes managed by our Network

To this purpose, in the application form you will be asked to express your level of interest for each of the three programmes (high, moderate or low interest).
After the evaluation, a unique ranking will be generated with the information on the programme(s) for which you have obtained the minimum score for admission.

The InterMaths EMJMD provides scholarships for academic scholars and guest lecturers who can contribute to the joint project. To apply, send your CV along with a teaching project (1 page maximum) describing your possible contribution to the InterMaths project.
A very important note! With "scholar" we refer to researchers, lecturers, professors... not to graduate students applying for a scholarship. So, please do not use the button below if you are just a student looking for a scholarship, thank you.

Are you eligible?

Application is open to students of any nationality. But before deciding about your eligibility, we need to look through all the required documents. So, if you want to be taken into consideration for our next intake, first check if you meet the minimum academic requirements, then fill in our on-line application form to submit all the required documents. Within a month after the deadline, your application will be evaluated along with all the others received, and a selection list will be published on this page - see below for detail.

Academic Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or other similar field with a very strong mathematical background (BS, BSc, SB, etc. or a degree at the same level of an academic Bachelor's Degree, e.g. its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of high standing, or 180 ECTS credits in the European system)

Language requirements

All applicants are required to prove an advanced level of English (CEFR B2/C1 level), certified by any of the following tests. The list below shows just a few examples, we accept most certificates as long as they verify the required level.

  • IELTS Academic (overall band score of 6.0 or above); TOEFL iBT (overall score of 80 or above); PTE Academic (56 or above overall); C1 Advanced (formerly known as Cambridge Advanced English: overall score of 169 or above);

  • or equivalent to the above.

Note also that:

  • Language certificates must not be dated more than 4 years.

  • Language certificates can be uploaded through our online application tool (saved as .pdf) or sent via ETS (our ETS score recipient code is 3676, institution name: University of L'Aquila).

  • Applicants who have conducted their university or secondary-school studies in an English-speaking institution will only have to verify that English is the medium of instruction in such institutions (to this purpose, you will find a dedicated section in the application form - no certificate submission is required).

For all the above documents, in case they are not written in English, please upload an official English translation, or a translation provided and signed by the Institution awarding your previous degree.

EMJMD Scholarships

EMJMD scholarships are offered to the most talented candidates who will be full-time enrolled in the InterMaths EMJMD programme. The EMJMD scholarship will include student participation costs (including the tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to student participation in the course), a contribution to student travel and installation cost and a subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme. Details on the EMJMD student scholarship amounts are sketched below.

are all the countries of the world EXCEPT the ones listed below: EU Member States + North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, UK.

Your EMJMD scholarship will include

Contribution to participation costs

including tuition fees, mandatory insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to your participation in the course. The InterMaths Consortium will directly deduct such a contribution from your scholarship.

Contribution to travel costs

  • 1,000 €/year for a scholarship holder residing in a Programme country, or

  • 2,000 €/year for a scholarship holder residing in a Partner country less than 4,000 km from L'Aquila, the coordinating institution, or

  • 3,000 €/year for a scholarship holder residing in a Partner country 4,000 km or more from L'Aquila, the coordinating institution.

Contribution to installation costs

1,000 € for scholarship holders residing in a Partner country only

Contribution to subsistence costs (living allowance)

1,000 €/month for all scholarship holders.
However, note that scholarship holders studying in their country of residence will not receive the allowance during that period (e.g. an Austrian student will not receive any monthly allowance while studying Semester2 in Austria).

Targeted regions
Note, these are IN ADDITION to the standard scholarships for Partner countries (see above)

In addition to the standard EMJMD scholarships, there are a number of additional scholarships (7 for the next edition) available for students from targeted regions of the world. These additional scholarships are offered to respond to the external policy priorities of the EU with regard to higher education and take into consideration the different levels of economic and social development in the relevant Partner Countries. The application procedure is the same as for the regular EMJMD scholarships.

Such scholarships are available for the following regions, 1 for each group (2 for Western Balkans)

For the 2024 edition, in addition to the EMJMD scholarships detailed above,  the InterMaths Consortium will offer a so-called Consortium Scholarship to a (TBD) number of eligible students who won't be awarded an EMJMD scholarship.

The Consortium Scholarships will grant the students partial waiver of the participations costs, as detailed in the chart.

Please note that participation costs include the tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to student participation in the programme. However, they do not include accommodation, living, travelling costs, the cost of equipment or books or the sports centres.

With regard to the first semester, a 344-EUR non-refundable deposit will be required within 30 days after notification of selection, whereas the remainder 356 EUR is to be cleared before Semester 1 begins.

Selection procedure

Please note that you won't be charged any fee to take part in the whole application and selection process.

In the period 1 March – 14 April 2024 the Evaluation Committee will evaluate all the applications successfully submitted by 1 pm 29 February 2024, and will draw up an Absolute Ranking List. Please note that this is the only ranking list that will be used for the awarding of EMJMD scholarships. Such a list may be used for other funding opportunities at the University of L'Aquila.

Selected students will receive notification and will have to send confirmation of acceptance within 3 days from notification. 

After the publication of the Absolute Ranking List, the Evaluation Committee will periodically evaluate all the applications submitted after 1 pm 29 February 2024, and will periodically publish lists of candidates eligible for admission to the Programme and for the award of Consortium scholarships. Note that those lists will NOT be used for the awarding of EMJMD scholarhips. 

The Evaluation Committee will then meet again in mid-August to finalize the pre-enrollments and to remove from the list the students who will not have certified the accomplishment of their bachelor's degree (or equivalent).

In case of an equal score reached by two candidates, the Committee agrees to try and maintain gender balance firstly, and geographical balance secondly.

Click on the Sign and submit button to get a receipt of your submitted data. Note, you won't be enabled to make any more changes at this stage! Once signed, you'll have to upload the signed document back via the online tool to finally SUBMIT your application to us.

What happens next

Our selection is a comparative one. So, we need to wait until the deadline has passed to start the selection process of all the submitted applications. Within around a month you'll find the selection list on this page

Applications will only be considered for scholarships if they are submitted by 1 pm Italy time 29 February 2024, complete with all required documents - reference letters might be submitted even later on, instead, as explained above.

So, make sure you complete the Sign and Submit process before such deadlines. Your application won't be taken into account unless you generate a PDF receipt, sign it and upload it back using the "Sign and Submit" function.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Erasmus+ Programme Countries are the Member States of the European Union, plus North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, Turkey.
All other countries of the world are considered Partner Countries.
But note that:
- If you have a Partner-Country citizenship, and
- You have carried out your main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any Programme Country,
then, you're considered as a Programme-Country student.
Learn more
No matter what type of bachelor's degree you already have (or you are going to gain), we need to look at all the required documents to decide about your eligibility - the title of your degree programme is indeed not enough at all to make such a decision. All applications will be reviewed by our Executive Committee after the deadline for application, not during the application process. Then, usually within a month, a selection list will be published and you'll know whether you are eligible or not for our programme.
If you have 2 nationalities, you have to choose under which nationality you want to apply when you complete the application form.
Please consider the 12-month residence rule explained above when you make such a decision.
If you haven't submitted it yet, you can make any changes you wish, replace files etc.

If you have completed the submission process (including signature), instead, your application has been assigned an official ID number and it cannot be changed in any way. You'll have to go through the withdrawal process first, sign your withdrawn application form, and upload it. After that, the system will give you confirmation of withdrawal, and will enable you to start a new one.
