The goal of this course is to provide the basic principles and fluid mechanics and the numerical methods for analysing the fluid motion with heat and mass transfer. Upon successful completion of this module, the student should - know the basis of fluid mechanics - know the basics of the finite volume method to discretise the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics - be able to use a CFD tool to conduct simple simulations about fluid flow - be able to read and understand scientific texts on related topics.
1) Introduction to CFD and Fluid Mechanics 2) Conservation of Mass, Momentum, Energy: integral and differential form 3) Special form of the Navier-Stokes equations. 4) Boundary layer 5) The finite volume method: methods to discretise the diffusion term, the advection term, pressure-velocity coupling and transient term 6) Boundary conditions, errors and non-uniform grid 7) How to use OpenFoam
The student must possess the basic knowledge and main concepts of mathematics, physics, numerical analysis and fluid mechanics.
